Pinterest Lens 101

]We are only a few months into 2017 and Pinterest is already making waves in the digital marketing industry. Pinterest has released a visual search tool powered by artificial intelligence called Lens. Pinterest is currently the second largest search engine. Google being the largest already has an image searching tool, but because of Pinterest is a visual bookmarking tool, this innovation looks to be very promising for the company and advertisers.

What is Lens? An image search tool with Pinterest.

Why would you use it? Your co-worker is wearing a gorgeous dress, she can’t seem to remember where she purchased it. You take a picture of her dress and Pinterest will find similar dresses via its Pins.

How to use it:

Before we give you a step-by-step breakdown of how to use Lens, we need to disclose that Lens is still in a beta stage, meaning not everything is perfect. Lens is currently available to all users on iPhone and Android Pinterest application.

  1. First of all, open the Pinterest app (make sure you have the most updated version – 6.22) and click on the magnifying glass button at the bottom of the screen.

  1. Once the search page opens, you should see a red camera button in the top-right corner of the screen beside the input field.

  1. When you press a camera button, you will be taken to a new page and introduced to this new feature. It will ask for permission to use your camera and access your photos. Once you give the required permissions, you will be taken to the Lens page.

  1. The Lens is that large circle in the middle of your screen. All you need to is tap on the circle, and it will immediately take a photo with your camera.

  1. Once the picture is taken, you will see some colorful little dots floating around on your screen. It means that the app is thinking.

  1. In a few seconds Pinterest will provide you some keywords that it thinks best describe your photo and also give some ideas for similar items.

  1. If you want to see the suggestions, all you have to do is scroll down the page and results will be presented in traditional Pinterest style.

  1. Also, keywords will hover at the top of the page. If you decide to click on one of them, the similar pins will change based on that keyword.

Don’t have time to do a real-time search? You can upload any image from your gallery to search via Lens!

Where should we use it?

So far Lens works with clothing, decor, and food. See something you like? All you have to do is take a picture and upload to Lens. It will do the rest.

Keep in mind, as we mentioned above, Lens is still in beta. If the results aren’t 100% accurate, don’t get discouraged. Pinterest will continue to update until it is close to perfect. In the meanwhile, you have the option of entering the best describing keywords by yourself.
